Buyer’s Guide: What You Need To Know

I couldnt just give you a handful of in-depth reviews when it comes to the subject of strollers for big kids. I wanted to include some of the things you should know and maybe even keep your eye out for when youre shopping for your next stroller. Lets take a look at some of the benefits of using a stroller first.

Benefits Of Using A Stroller

There are a ton of benefits to using a stroller. My favorite is probably the most obvious: it makes transportation much easier. No more kicking and screaming throughout the airport when youre using a stroller.

Secondly, strollers are comfortable for your kids. Youll be able to get some afternoon cardio in, while they take a nap in the seat. Not to mention, strollers have a ton of safety features that are great for kiddos and parents!

Weight Capacity

So, if youre looking for a stroller for bigger kids, weight capacity obviously plays a part. The weight limit on strollers can vary quite a bit. You can find strollers that can only hold 25 pounds, while others can hold up to 110 pounds.

Ive found the 50 pounds is a solid weight limit for most children. Adjust your shopping experience accordingly!

Dimensions

The dimensions of a stroller will affect how it fits through doors and how easily it stores in cars. The real concern for this feature is if youre looking at double strollers. You want to make sure this is a stroller you can still fit through most door frames. The last thing youd want is to be at the doctors office, only to realize the stroller doesnt fit through the door!

Weight Of Stroller

Another thing to consider is the weight of the stroller. If a stroller is really heavy, you may notice its hard to push once you have your kids inside, plus your belongings. This can create fatigue on your hands and wrists.

Having a stroller that is lightweight not only makes it easy to push, but it makes it a lot easier to travel with. Ive found that most strollers fall between 11 and 30 pounds.

Construction

The construction of the stroller is something you should keep in mind. This boils down to what its made out of. You dont have to spend $100 on a stroller only for it to break after a few uses. Try to find strollers with aluminum frames. This will make your stroller durable yet lightweight enough that its easy to carry.

Another thing to look at when it comes to construction is the material the stroller is made out of. Is the seat scratchy? Is the fabric soft and padded?

Lastly, when youre looking at construction, be sure to look at the wheels. Ill talk more about this later on, but there are several different types of wheels and wheel features that some strollers have that others dont.

Safety

One of the most important things in our lives as parents is the safety of our children. Theres enough to worry about already, without needing to be concerned if their stroller is safe enough. When it comes to stroller safety, be sure that there are harnesses, buckles, and brakes that work properly.

You may also want your stroller to have a canopy. This keeps the sun out of your childs eyes and gives them a bit of shade to keep cool in. There are canopies that have windows, so you can always keep an eye on your child even if theyre just napping.

Wheels

So, when it comes to stroller wheels, one amazing feature you can look for is shock absorption. This will make it less noticeable if you run over a rock or accidentally brush against the curb. You can also get strollers that have larger wheels in back than in front. This gives a smoother ride no matter how rough the terrain happens to be.

Foldability

Okay, parents, lets get real. The last thing you or I want to do is make our lives more stressful in any way. Be sure to make sure the stroller youre thinking of buying is easy to fold up. It can be hectic trying to get your child to wait by your side as you struggle to fold up the stroller.

Imagine this, paired with a trunk full of groceries that need to get into the fridge, plus the crying baby in the car seat! Sounds exhausting! Luckily, there are plenty of strollers that fold up in just seconds. Some you can even fold with just one hand, and either way, I think this is one of the most important features of a stroller.

Types Of Strollers

There are a total of six basic types of strollers. Depending on your lifestyle and needs, you may need a different stroller than another parent. There are double strollers that can hold two children at once, side by side.

There are also full-sized strollers and ones specifically made for jogging. There are also lightweight or umbrella strollers which keep your babies shaded from the sun and that are easy to carry when not in use.

Lastly, there are the car seat carriers and the travel systems. Both of these can use car seats as the chair and are perfect for people who commute with their children a lot.

FAQ

At what age is a child too big for a stroller?

It really depends but most people use a stroller for children between the ages of one and five years old.

If I’m visiting Disney, should I bring a stroller for big kids?

I think thats a great idea. At Disney, the mall, or anywhere else where there will be a lot of walking involved, you may want to bring a stroller. Kids get worn out easily, and in such a crowded place, it makes it easier to keep tabs on your child.

Can I use an umbrella stroller for my infant child?

You actually cannot. Lightweight or umbrella strollers are made for children that can support their head and neck on their own. Youll want to wait until your child is at least six months old to put them in an umbrella stroller.

Final Words

Now that youve read just about everything there is to know about strollers for big kids, its time to make a decision. Did you find one that works for you and your family? I hope so!

Remember to keep in mind safety features such as brakes and buckles. You dont have to spend a ton of money to get a stroller that will work for years to come. Good luck, and happy shopping!
